Černolice Rocks Natural Monument

Černolice Rocks, also called Devil’s Rocks, are Bohemia’s first climbing rocks.

This enchanting rock massif with mysterious atmosphere was climbed as early as 1905. Thanks to the easy to medium difficulty, you can try your luck too, but please make sure you have proper protection. However, you can also enjoy the view of the peaks of the Brdy mountains and the Cukrák transmitter as a hiker.

Look for trilobites and salamanders

The rock massif falls under the geologically and paleontologically significant locality of Barrandien, and from the height, it resembles the back of a prehistoric lizard. This simile is not far from the truth. The rock is composed of sandstone sediments, with fragments of trilobites and brachiopods still visible. Will you discover one of them on your expedition?

You may be lucky to find endangered species still alive, such as the salamanders or the woodpeckers. Among the plants, heather, mosses, and rare bellflowers complete the mysterious atmosphere.

Revenge of the Angry Devil

But back to climbing. The Devil’s Rocks consist of several towers: Double, Middle, Northeast, and a tower called Kulisa. The highest of them is about 30 metres high, and there are 60 routes in total, mostly of easy and medium difficulty. Thanks to this, the Devil’s Rocks are a popular place for climbing schools.

Are you wondering where the name of these rocks came from? According to an old legend, it resulted from a bet between St. Kilian and the devil. As it happens, the vengeful devil lost. He threw huge blocks of stones on the ground in a rage and did not appear in the region again. We hope that you will enjoy this fabulous trip repeatedly!

Enjoy your trip!
